You are invited to Ladybird Modernism – a talk by John Grindrod, architectural theorist and author of Concretopia: A Journey Around the Rebuilding of Postwar Britain.
Ladybird books are usually thought to depict the cosiest kind of twentieth century suburbia. But the reality was rather more progressive. In this talk John Grindrod takes us on a tour of the amazing scope of modernism in Ladybird books. From flyovers to spaceships, tower blocks to polyester clothing, encounter the surprising world depicted for children in the sixties and seventies, where concrete, plastic and nuclear power were our friends.
John Grindrod will be introduced by Suzy Round.
This event is hosted by paintingresearch at Wimbledon College of Arts as part of a year long examination of Punk in the Suburbs.
